Mehdi Jalayerian’s expertise spans major high-rise and supertall buildings, convention/hotel facilities and educational/government projects. He embraces technological change and is at the forefront of developing High Performance and Intelligent Buildings. He was responsible for building system design for the world’s first positive energy large scale building, Masdar Headquarters in Abu Dhabi and the world’s next tallest building, Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia. As a Managing Director for ESD, Mehdi leads the firm’s high-rise / tall building practice and is accountable for business development, client relations, contract performance and overall quality control. During his three decades of experience in HVAC and sustainable design practice, he has received eight ASHRAE Excellence in Engineering and Technology awards, an Illinois Engineering Council award and a Chicago Building Congress Award for his projects. He has published and presented numerous articles pertaining to integrated mechanical building systems design with a focus on sustainable and high performance design, system operational flexibility and building life safety and phased occupancy planning, and is a major contributing author to the ASHRAE Design Guide for Tall, Supertall and Mega Tall Buildings. He is a member and chairman of the Energy and Sustainability Task Force at the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings and serves as Expert Peer Review Committee for Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). He has served as Adjunct/Research Professor for the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Department of Architecture and on the Advisory Group for the CTBUH.
