BREAKOUT SESSION II - Planning & Design | May 22, 2025
Les White, Infrastructure & Sustainability Engineer, Cemex
As discussions about sustainable construction and low carbon materials in construction, specifically concrete, continues to grow and expand, definitions of these materials are becoming more consistent. As we move forward the question of “How do we plan and design for the use of low carbon concrete?” Establishing clear and accessible baselines or benchmarks from which targets can be set is an important tool in successfully achieving sustainable construction goals. This session will look at real world examples of including GWP targets into projects, an overview of ACI 323, impacts of optimized concrete mix designs, experience with some alternative binders, and the benefit of minimizing overdesign, or “right-sizing” the design, of concrete elements on meeting GWP targets as well as performance requirements. The concrete and cement industry has developed a wide range of approaches to providing low carbon concrete to meet project targets while maintaining required performance and durability. These approaches include optimizing concrete mixes to use components and proportions as efficiently as possible and incorporating newer materials, such as blended cements, in those mixes among other efforts. There are ongoing efforts in the development of non-traditional alternative cements and supplementary cementitious materials on a variety of fronts including the use of different raw materials for cement production, newer ways of processing currently used raw materials, novel approaches to generating currently used raw materials, and many more.
