AROUND THE NETWORK: A Community for Women Who Make Lasers and Robots That Break Glass Ceilings Goes Global

Member association Women in Construction Tech (WCT), which held its first event at Builtworlds Venture West last year, recently announced the launch of five chapters spanning three continents and the unveiling of a brand-new website.

In the summer of 2021, five women in construction tech met at a table for ten at a San Francisco café to talk shop. The open seats sparked a question… how could they find enough women to fill the other five seats? That idea inspired BuiltWorlds members Julieta Moradei and Antonia Elisa Soler Blasco to co-found Women in Construction Tech, an organization dedicated to creating opportunities and developing relationships for women driving innovation in the construction industry.

The WCT launched that July and hosted its first in-person event at the BuiltWorlds conference in Palo Alto, CA in March of 2022. They achieved record-high participation and received great feedback and interest from the participants. WCT went on to host two more in-person events last year–at BuiltWorlds EMEA Summit in Paris, France and in Chicago, IL for the BuiltWorlds Americas Summit.

Now, less than two years since its initial launch, WCT is celebrating its growth and expansion with the creation of 5 local chapters in Boston, Latin America, Madrid, New York, and San Francisco.

The WCT’s 100-plus members are a mix of investors, technology adopters and innovation leaders from construction companies, and startup founders and employees. WCT envisions a construction industry where women are well-networked, support each other’s efforts to improve and advance in the space, and otherwise thrive. They are also building a database of women who are looking for speaking opportunities, hiring, and much more so that they can help make connections and increase representation and visibility for women in the industry.

“It’s amazing to see how much demand there is for something like this in our industry,” marvels Antonia Elisa Soler Blasco, Director of the Hilti Technology Office at Hilti. “From our first event, we’ve had lots of interest and we are thrilled at how quickly we’ve grown this community. Clearly there was a need. BuiltWorlds has been a staunch supporter of Women in Construction Tech from our earliest days. Being able to host events at BuiltWorlds conferences has been key to WCT’s growth over the past year and we are deeply grateful for how they’ve shown up for women in the construction industry.”

WCT’s next event will be on March 20th at the Fieldwire office in San Francisco as part of the BuiltWorlds Venture West Conference in San Francisco, CA on March 20-22, 2023. BuiltWorlds Venture Conference has been the world’s premier conference focused on venture investing in construction and built environment-related emerging technology. Leading fund investors, strategic investors, and startups gather each year to take the pulse of the industry’s startup ecosystem at the BuiltWorlds Venture Conference. Hope to see you there!
