BRUNSWICK, ME – Consigli Construction is managing construction of the Barry Mills Hall and the John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies at Bowdoin College. The two buildings, which total 50,000 square feet, are being constructed with mass timber, including cross-laminated timber (CLT), as part of the college’s effort to be carbon neutral.
HGA, the project’s architect, mentioned in a report produced earlier this year concrete, steel and aluminum — account for 23% of annual global carbon emissions. However, timber is not only considered a more eco-friendly option but also carries added carbon capture benefits that might often be overlooked as a benefit to using this material.
Consigli has said that while the foundation of the two buildings do use concrete and steel, those materials were not used at all above the ground level. They also went on to say that the construction process itself was faster than if they had used traditional materials.
