Building Tech Forum – IoT in Practice

Data plays an increasingly important role within the built world and it is crucial for building and project management to have a unified system that integrates all operations. The April Building Tech Forum was centered around IoT in the industry and was hosted by BuiltWorlds’ Research Analyst, Sean Wrenn, and featured speakers David Mullins, Lean Manager at Mortenson Construction, and Peter Bysshe, Brand Development at RECON Dynamics. Within their respective companies, David and Peter provide 24/7 remote IoT monitoring solutions that are used within commercial construction sites.

IoT, or internet of things, has had a quick evolution since its inception in the 1980s. Simply stated, it is used as a network to remotely deliver time-saving information, such as monitoring and managing energy usage. Within the AEC field, IoT technologies are a crucial tool for optimizing energy consumption in buildings, reducing costs, improving sustainability, maintaining and evaluating efficiency, and enhancing the occupant experience. What makes this technology special is that the owner sets the expectations–from safety and efficiency goals, real-time and paper trail data, to identifying detriments to working conditions.
