Technological Convergence and the Dawn of the Smart Jobsite

The 21st century will be about big, hybrid (building and civil) infrastructure projects. The fundamental issue with big hybrid projects is that common tasks become scaled-up to sprawling, multi-faceted challenges. No one in New York understands this like Skanska USA, who has led or is leading some of New York’s biggest infrastructure projects including the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, the Moynihan Train Hall at the Farley Building and the redevelopment of Terminal B at LaGuardia Airport. Large projects such as these can have in excess of 15,000 design drawings, 10,000 CAD and BIM files and schedules exceeding 20,000 tasks, coordinated across a multitude of design and project teams. Organizing, understanding and distributing that information is as much a people as a technology problem. Senior Virtual Design & Construction Manager, Pierce Reynoldson, will discuss big hybrid challenges and Skanska’s strategy for managing it.

How to Fully Digitize a Jobsite

Digitization has been a major force in transforming entire industries, allowing them to become more efficient. The ability to fully digitize a construction site, one of the most complex environments existing, offers a new way to monitor and manage the site’s work and progress. Using autonomous situation-aware drone technology, the various engineering teams can now scan the site daily, with an unmatched level of details. But in order to really utilize the potential of digitization, advanced data tools and algorithms are needed. First, data needs to be easily accessible from anywhere and at any time. Second, advanced analytical tools are needed to help users extract insight from the data. Tools that provide, for example, accurate comparison between plan and scan and easy detection of changes from scan to scan. Third, an environment to manage and share data related insights is needed in order to streamline the process within the organization.
