Implementing Lean Construction Processes at Cornell Tech
Marielle Price, Director Construction Team, Fieldwire
Tim Croke, First Vice President, Tishman Construction
The Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island is a $2 billion, 2 million square foot, 12 acre endeavor to bring a top university to New York City. The first phase of this complex, high-profile project opened up this year. Tishman AECOM realized the benefits of using mobile technologies to streamline processes on the project. We all know that Lean construction produces higher quality projects but you don’t have to be on an IPD project to use Lean strategies. The mobile technology revolution has changed the way we communicate, even in the construction industry. We’ll look at ways that technology such as Fieldwire can help project teams be more efficient and productive on the jobsite.

Managing Construction Site Materials with Automation Techniques
Dale Beard, Co-Founder and President, Intelliwave Technologies
Mark Davidson, Procurement & Materials Management, Aecom
Q&A Moderator: Matt Gray, CEO & Co-Founder BuiltWorlds
Learn techniques and best practices on how to successfully deploy and integrate automation technologies into materials management procedures. When the cost of construction materials and equipment make up 40% or more of a project’s capital cost, mismanagement of materials can lead to massive cost overruns and lengthy project delays. By fully integrating automation and visibility technologies into construction processes, projects can realize dramatic increases in worker productivity and schedule predictability, ultimately lowering construction costs and risks. Some of the technologies in this discussion will include cloud, field devices, barcodes and RFID tracking tags. The discussion will also include system implementation, integration techniques, lessons learned and project results.

Technological Convergence and the Dawn of the Smart Jobsite
Pierce Reynoldson, VDC Manager - Metro NY, Skanska
Q&A Moderator: Matt Gray, CEO & Co-Founder, BuiltWorlds
The 21st century will be about big, hybrid (building and civil) infrastructure projects. The fundamental issue with big hybrid projects is that common tasks become scaled-up to sprawling, multi-faceted challenges. No one in New York understands this like Skanska USA, who has led or is leading some of New York’s biggest infrastructure projects including the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, the Moynihan Train Hall at the Farley Building and the redevelopment of Terminal B at LaGuardia Airport. Large projects such as these can have in excess of 15,000 design drawings, 10,000 CAD and BIM files and schedules exceeding 20,000 tasks, coordinated across a multitude of design and project teams. Organizing, understanding and distributing that information is as much a people as a technology problem. Senior Virtual Design & Construction Manager, Pierce Reynoldson, will discuss big hybrid challenges and Skanska’s strategy for managing it.

How to Fully Digitize a Jobsite
Gil Mildworth, VP Business Development, SiteAware
Digitization has been a major force in transforming entire industries, allowing them to become more efficient. The ability to fully digitize a construction site, one of the most complex environments existing, offers a new way to monitor and manage the site’s work and progress. Using autonomous situation-aware drone technology, the various engineering teams can now scan the site daily, with an unmatched level of details. But in order to really utilize the potential of digitization, advanced data tools and algorithms are needed. First, data needs to be easily accessible from anywhere and at any time. Second, advanced analytical tools are needed to help users extract insight from the data. Tools that provide, for example, accurate comparison between plan and scan and easy detection of changes from scan to scan. Third, an environment to manage and share data related insights is needed in order to streamline the process within the organization.

During this conversation, we will explore the way in which Lendlease has developed an Innovation Program to prototype specific innovation from software to strategic supply chains. We will discuss the balance between focusing on innovation as related to core incremental ideas, product and service offerings, and new products and services that don’t exist in the market. In exploring this work, we will aim to answer the question of “how one launches a true innovation department.”
