BuiltWorlds’ Benchmarking Program gives members the invaluable opportunity to assess their technology adoption relative to their industry peers, providing profound insights into enhancing their tech stack. The Technology Specialty Reports harness comprehensive survey data sourced from worldwide general contractors and AEC professionals. This is the second year that BuildWorlds has released an Offsite Construction Benchmarking Report, including one deep-dive tech specialty report on Prefabrication Design solutions.
This piece will uncover some of the key insights surrounding offsite tech that are mentioned within the tech specialty report. This article does not include satisfaction rates for all of the solutions examined or key insights for each category. These specific and encompassing insights can be found in the Tech Speciality Report.

Autodesk's Revit is a BIM software for architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, designers and contractors. Their tools enable its user to design, document, coordinate, and manage AEC projects with ease through its workflow.
Benchmarking data indicates that Revit is the most-implemented solution among survey respondants. Survey data also suggest that Revit's key strength include its ease-of-use and on-site installation.
Alternative Solutions Examined Within the 2023 Offsite Report
Noteworthy Findings
- As a tech specialty area, Prefabrication Design Solutions earned moderate satisfaction ratings (6.4 / 10), meaning users are generally happy with this technology.
- The average functional use ratings varied for the six categories surveyed — ’Ease of Use’ ranked lowest with a rating of 5.0 / 10, while ‘Optimizing the Production of Prefabricated Components’ was highest at 8.1 / 10. So, although respondents are generally happy, there is a fair amount of variance from functionality to functionality.
- Prefab design solutions are leveraged by companies of all sizes, but they are most commonly adopted by large contractors (GCs accounting for 63.6% and specialty contractors the remaining 36.4%)
- When performing offsite construction, these technologies are critical for teams to stay on schedule, reduce waste, optimize transportation logistics, and build more sustainably, ultimately resulting in a higher-quality product
- Despite their efficacy, only 7.7% of survey respondents reported using one for every project.
- However, 46.2% are testing on a few projects which is promising in terms of continued adoption moving forward.
