To put it plainly, Dr. Martin Fischer, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, is in another dimension. His instrumental work developing 4D modeling (3D + time) has enabled the virtual design process (VDC) to rapidly leap forward. While in California for our latest BW Road Trip adventure, Empowering the Workforce, we took a pit stop on the Stanford campus the moment we got into Silicon Valley. There, we caught up with the good doctor for a brief chat before one of his classes.

As Director of the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE), Fischer pretty much started 4D at Stanford. CIFE just happens to be recognized as the world’s leading academic research center on VDC; so, they’re kind of a big deal. We bent Fischer’s ear about a number of topics from worldwide BIM adoption to onsite visualization technology and all points in between. Afterward, he directed us to an incredible shawarma truck. To say we left satisfied would be an understatement.
