Project Details

PCL used Vita Industrial's Vita Load Navigator (VLN) on their McCarron Water Treatement Plant project in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

VLN detects load movement in real-time and makes load adjustments with its high-powered fans, ensuring stable crane lifts.

Objectives

PCL Construction needed to fit large wall forms (25'X25') into very tight spaces (2" wiggle room).

  • They faced very windy conditions and needed to find a way to control large sails hanging from the tower crane.
  • These needs led them to consider using VLN on the project.

Outcomes

PCL picked up a month of time on the schedule because they could work in windy conditions and set precision picks using the auto hold feature (keeps loads positioned in the harshest of conditions) and the memory button for repetitive picks.

  • They kept their crew safer with no accidents by not having to fight taglines or be under the heavy loads.
  • PCL cited a relaxed labor force because the technology was a great assist and gave them peace of mind.

Next Steps & Future Use

PCL now considers the use of VLN on future projects company-wide.

BuiltWorlds Analysis

BuiltWorlds' survey data indicates varying adoption of safety equipment solutions in companies. Some companies have not implemented these solutions, presenting an opportunity for increased adoption. Others are piloting or selectively using safety solutions, while some have integrated them into most projects. However, many respondents are unsure about their company's use of safety solutions, indicating a potential communication or awareness gap.
