Build vs. Buy – 05.17.22 Tech Adoption Leaders Forum

On the May 2022 E&C Tech Adoption Leaders Forum, BuiltWorlds members heard from Eric Whobrey, Director of Technology and Innovation at ARCO/Murray about how technology adoption and innovation management is strategized at the organization. Eric has managed web and data development teams, built his own tech, established a technology strategy for a billion dollar business, and actively invests in technology startups. Previously, he managed the Operational Effectiveness program at Basis Technologies (formerly Centro). He now runs the Technology & Innovation department for ARCO/Murray, a Design-Build Construction company, and leads AM Ventures, an AEC focused venture capital investment fund.

During this Tech Adoption Leaders Forum, members received a presentation on how ARCO/Murray determines when to develop custom built software solutions versus when to buy external software solutions. Additionally, members explored how Eric and his team have created and leveraged internal resources to develop their own solutions to aid in project delivery and gather actionable insights on their projects. A review of ARCO/Murray’s technology implementation, organization structure, decision making process and software development process were highlighted during this month’s forum.
