At last year's Construction Tech Conference, we had the opportunity to sit down with keynote speaker Anita Woolley Nelson, chief strategy officer for Skanska USA Building, to ask her about the most important, most exciting aspects of emerging technology in the construction sector.
Skanska USA does nearly $7 billion in annual revenue across multiple sectors of construction and has been a leader in improving project flow efficiency by integrating technology into their existing systems. As CSO, Nelson is charged with overseeing the current and future people, process, and technology implementation strategies being implemented across the entire organization.
In her keynote address, Nelson said that the implementation process to new technology is as important as the technology itself, and she reiterates that key message throughout her session video.
"You have to do it (implement new tech) one inch at a time. You can't ask people to make giant leaps"
Nelson goes on to emphasize that one of the most important technological advancements that her and her team are keeping their eyes on is the development of predictive artificial intelligence. She cautions that much like other technological advancements, it's important to educate and implement slowly and steadily to ensure a smooth installment. Part of the education, Nelson says, is to ensure the workforce understands that technology is not aimed at taking jobs away but instead making people more efficient in their current roles.
