BuiltWorlds’ May 1 analyst call was our second in a series of three AI-focused analyst calls for 2024. We were joined by four speakers from three AI-focused startups innovating the AEC industry. Our guest speakers gave demos of their platforms and solutions, and engaged in a discussion focused on data management and perceived hurdles to AI adoption.

As evident by the three different solutions on the analyst call, each with their own unique capabilities, there are many use cases for AI across the AEC industry.

About the Speakers

Emma Nazim, CEO, Constructable

Emma has developed software for the built world for over 10 years. She was previously VP of Product at Appfolio where she focused on streamlining and automating the workflows of real estate managers and developers. She also developed a product that simplified the time card process for subcontractors, using AI to manage everything over text message.

Stan Singh, Director of Product, Doxel

Stan works closely with both the field and office personnel in the construction industry to help alleviate their pain points associated with tracking jobsite progress through the use of technology. Stan's experience in the industry ranges from running his own residential painting business in college to working as a project engineer for large commercial GCs and then transitioning to the construction tech scene by working for companies such as Bluebeam, Raken. Now at Doxel, his prior experiences give him a holistic view on how all aspects of a business (sales, marketing, product, engineering, and customer success) come together to provide value for clients.

Norhan Bayomi, Co-founder & COO, Lamarr.ai

Norhan Bayomi is an entrepreneur, designer, environmental scientist, and researcher who investigates the unequal impacts of climate risks on urban communities by fusing AI and urban analytics. Norhan received her PhD from Building Technology from MIT in 2022 and masters from the same program in 2017. She is also a Research Scientist at MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative and lead researcher at the Urban Metabolism Group in the Building Technology Program.

John Fernandez, Co-founder & CSO, Lamarr.ai

John is a professor of building technology in the Department of Architecture and a practicing architect. John is cofounder and CSO of Lamarr.ai, leading business strategy and Environmental Solutions. He founded and directs the MIT Urban Metabolism Group, a highly multidisciplinary research group focused on the resource intensity of cities and design and technology pathways for future urbanization. He is author of two books, numerous articles in scientific and design journals including Science, the Journal of Industrial Ecology, Building and Environment, Energy Policy and others, and author of nine book chapters.

Key Takeaway - Data Management

Many overthink what is required of them (and their data) for adopting AI-based solutions, which in turn, leads to hesitation to adopt such solutions. Each of our speakers stressed that their platforms do the work for you - you don't need robust data management measures in place in order to use their platforms. Once you start working with many of the AI-focused solutions on the market today, data collection becomes easy and insight collection becomes seamless.
