Predicting Project Timelines

Scheduling Solutions For AEC Professionals

The average duration of a commercial construction project can vary significantly from several months to upwards of five or more years, depending on factors such as the size and complexity of the project, location, weather conditions, availability of materials, labor force and other requirements. Influences beyond anyone’s control impact the AEC industry daily, such as common storms halting progress or as complex as geopolitical conflicts disrupting supply chains globally.

With that in mind, we recognize we will never be able to create an accurate schedule for an entire project with 100 percent certainty. However, several emerging and legacy solutions are developing additional tools to help contractors, subs, suppliers and their partners ensure project success.

From the Data

The table below is pulled directly from the 2023 Annual BuiltWorlds Preconstruction Benchmarking Report and illustrates solution and satisfaction data from the 2023 Preconstruction Survey specific to Scheduling. Other topics in the report include Bid Management/Prequalification, Project Modeling & Simulation, Scheduling, Estimating, Lifecycle Costing and Value Engineering.

Clearly, industry-average satisfaction ratings for the engineering and construction companies who completed the survey are largely not positive. Considering how impactful this phase of construction is for project success, it will be interesting to see how investment in developing these technologies progresses. BuiltWorlds’ 2024 Preconstruction Research will be released starting on March 14, beginning with the Tech Specialty Reports for each of the six technologies asked about in the 2024 survey, followed by the Annual Benchmarking Report and Top 50 List in the following weeks.

Our March 20 Analyst Call will highlight three companies aiming to streamline the scheduling process, mitigate delays and effectively communicate with all project stakeholders.
