Summit Speaker Spotlight: Oracle’s Burcin Kaplanoglu

Oracle

In preparation for the BuiltWorlds Summit next week, we reached out to the thought leaders speaking at the event to learn a bit more about their unique trajectories through the built environment. In this interview, we sat down with Burcin Kaplanoglu, Senior Director, Industry Strategy and Innovation at Oracle to discover why he’s so excited for the built world in the years to come.

How do you see project management and your love of technology beginning to merge right now in the built space?

“For me, this is an extremely exciting time in the AEC world, as you are seeing the pace of innovation and the adoption of technology accelerating rapidly. Builders and related firms are increasingly focused on achieving new levels of productivity, efficiency, and safety – really, improving how they work across project activities with the help of technology.

In addition, these organizations are exploring ways to leverage data across their operations to improve decision-making, standardize outcomes, and enable the repeatability of success. And there are many interesting technologies that play a role in those areas – things like IoT, BIM-enabled scheduling and field management, AR/VR and more.

So in light of those – and what follows – I’m particularly interested in understanding what the worksite of 2030 will look like. That story is not limited to Oracle’s products and services. That’s the story of a how projects will be managed in the near future.”

You’ve been an adjunct professor at the Northwestern University School of Engineering, so when talking about the year 2030, you’re helping educate the people that are going to be running that very jobsite. How has this informed your work at Oracle?

“Teaching isn’t one directional. You teach something and you learn from them, too. What I’ve seen after doing this for so long, first of all, is that the profile of the students changes. The new generation is much more willing to use technology. I clearly see the adoption of technology and solutions by younger generations will be faster than older generations because it’s just part of their DNA.

The younger generation’s willing to share their location and insights more than the older generation because as a whole, they actually see the benefits of it. Here comes 2030 – more than 10 years from now – and they’re at mid to high-level positions in these companies. As an industry as a whole, we’ve always complained we haven’t really spent money on R&D or IT. We hadn’t invested in it. The new generation will help significantly.”
